Stephen Ministry is about Christ caring
for people through
people. Trained Stephen Ministers offer one-to-one listening
care to those in our community who are experiencing such
things as
- Loneliness
- Loss of a loved one
- Anxiety/depression
- Illness/hospitalization
- Questions about God/faith
- Divorce/separation
- Birth of a child
- Unemployment
- A recent move
Stephen Ministers receive extensive training over a four-month
period. Following the training Stephen Ministers meet twice
a month in small-group supervisory sessions (always preserving
the confidentiality of their caring relationship) and in
continuing education, in addition to weekly meetings with
their care receivers.
Why the name “Stephen” Ministry?
The name comes from Stephen, commissioned by the Apostles
to provide caring ministry to those in need. You can read
more about him in Acts
6 in the New Testament. Stephen
Ministry is an interdenominational
ministry practiced in
more than 7,000 congregations from 90 Christian denominations
in all 50 states, nine Canadian provinces and 20 other
countries.
